Jesus at the Temple  Matthew 21:12-13

12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’[a] but you are making it ‘a den of robbers”

So the topic for TOT-85 is to do a personal analysis of this event.  Look for

    • Cause
    • Effect
    • Reason of the
    • Who took the results of this trade
    • Who benefited?
    • What does this story tell us?

We know WWJD (we know what Jesus did, but why?)

So your mission (If you choose to accept it), do your analysis and comment on at least one (hopefully you’ll do all) of the reasons above to share at our next TOT meeting on the 29th of September.  Make sure you “speculate” and come up with and answer of what this story tells us.  Please don’t use/refer to any current day examples (but if you want to, that’s fine).

What Does the Bible Say about Community?

The writer of Ecclesiastes suggested that people are designed to live in community. “Two are better than one,” Solomon said, and “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12). Community brings friendship and support for times of adversity (Proverbs 17:17; 27:9).

Jesus expanded the scope of community, telling His disciples to begin their testimony and outreach in their own back yard (Jerusalem), and then reach out beyond their city to their country and surrounding countries (Judea and Samaria), and then into all the world (Acts 1:8Matthew 28:19-20). As Christ-followers expand their outreach, other people will, hopefully, see the power of community at work.

By modern definitions, “Christian community” can be: a denomination, network of churches, or organizations; a group of people following a specific Christian leader; or Christians who fellowship together based on shared beliefs. When many hear the words, however, they think specifically of the local church. The Greek word ekklesia, commonly translated “church,” is a called-out assembly or gathering. It includes both the universal body of Christ and local groups of believers in specific churches (1 Corinthians 12:271 Thessalonians 2:142 Thessalonians 1:1).

In the early church, small community groups of believers met in house churches. Even today, a local church may decide to add small groups or life groups to meet regularly in homes for Bible study, fellowship and service. To function properly, small groups or life groups should function as extensions of the larger church body for greater connection and growth. They are not meant to replace Sunday worship services, or remove the group from the authority and oversight of church leaders.

Why Community Is Essential for Our Christian Walk

“He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:10-11).

Life within the love of Christ is filled with joy, peace, love, hope, forgiveness and mercy …but Jesus promised, it isn’t easy. From the very beginning, God declared it was not good for us to be alone. When Jesus was preparing to ascend to heaven to His Father, He promised we would never be alone, by the power of the Holy Spirit He would give to those who believe in Him. Community is layered into the fabric of who, and Whose, we are.

How Is Biblical Community Defined? “Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do” (Philippians 3:17). God desires a relationship with us, and He Himself, exists in community as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We are set apart and called by God to fulfill His purpose for our lives, and bring glory to Him through all we are and do. But we were never meant to figure out and execute it all alone. “Unfortunately, today’s Western mind prizes autonomy and values privacy, and this has greatly affected how many Christians think about their relationship with other Christians,” Eric Bancroft writes. “They tragically misunderstand the Christian life is personal not private.” Scripture provides us with ample examples of God’s design for community in our lives. We challenge each other, provide support, and “as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). Paul wrote, “He died for us so that, whether awake or asleep, we may live together with him” (1 Thessalonians 5:10-11). The NIV Study Bible explains, “To be Christ’s is to have entered a relationship that nothing can destroy.” Paul continued, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” The NIV Study Bible explains, “The verb can be applied to building houses, but Paul frequently used it for Christians being edified.” The word edified means “to instruct or benefit, especially morally or spiritually; uplift.” We are given a purpose to fulfill in the life we are living right now. “This word from Paul was meant to encourage and edify (build up) the Thessalonians,” The Moody Bible Commentary explains. “The application for them was not merely an eschatological promise to hold but their present life to live.” Paul wrote to the Philippians, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13). We place this slogan a lot of places, but it was never meant to be a proclamation of pride. We lean into Him, and the community He provides, for the strength we need. In Christ, we have a spirit of confidence in Him, not our own strength. The Gospel Coalition defines church community as “the unity of the church refers to the union of the people of God, in all their various distinctive and expressions, bound to God and to one another by the gospel.” Photo credit: ©Getty Images/Rawpixel

    3. Agenda for our discussion’:

Tonight we are going to discuss how The Bible emphasizes the importance of community for Christians. Here are some reasons why:

Christian community is simply sharing a common life in Christ.

It provides us with prayer support for our healing, which is not found elsewhere.

It moves us beyond the self-interested isolation of private lives and beyond the superficial social contacts that pass for “Christian fellowship”.

It challenges us to commit ourselves to life together as the people of God.

It is evidence that we walk in the light.

It fulfills Christ’s commands by helping those in our faith community.

It provides a supportive and nurturing environment for believers to grow spiritually and thrive.

It helps us stay focused on God.

Is Community Important in the Old Testament?

Biblically, community began with Adam and God, and eventually included Eve. They “walked” and talked together in perfect communion in the Garden of Eden until sin destroyed that perfection (Genesis 3:8). In shame, the first couple hid from God. Adam and Eve’s perfect communion broke down, and all relationships in community thereafter would be marred by sin.

The couple became parents, and cities were established from subsequent family groups. The first city was built by Cain in the land of Nod (Genesis 4:16-17). A famous city in the Old Testament, referenced repeatedly in stories from Abraham to David and beyond, was the Jewish community in Hebron. Two infamous cities, where the believing community broke down, were Sodom and Gomorrah

The Israelites received rules for right behavior — for relating to God and to one another in community — in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-17

After seventy years, many Jews migrated to major cities in the eastern Mediterranean world and lived in communities there, but 42,360 returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls and city and restart temple worship (Nehemiah 1:1; 2:3-20Ezra 1:5; 3:1-13). An estimated 80,000 Jews remained, by choice, in Babylon. Sometime later, these Jews in Persia faced a death sentence (detailed in the book of Esther); yet their community united and triumphed over their enemies.

Why Community Is Essential for Our Christian Walk

“He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:10-11).

      1. I think that community is important in individual congregations and in the worldwide Christian Church. It’s also important for us to reach out in the communities where we live, and abroad, to share the love of Christ and the message of salvation.

    1. Opening prayer: by SGG

      Agenda:

Let’s pick next months topic! TOT 82

Situation:  Going to ask for a little speculation for this topic.  Caring on the theme for the past two months (forgiveness), it has been document in a book that was reviewed last month “Forgiving what you can’t forget” by Lysa Terkeurst that forgiving ourselves is not in the Bible.

      Mission:  Why isn’t it?

Execution:  my facts from the WWW are:

      • Bible is 1,500 years old
      • 450 bible types written in English
      • Bible has around 40 authors
      • Pastor Eric, would you please give your synopsis of how books get into the bible?
      • Let’s go around the horn and discuss why this topic wasn’t addressed

      General talking points:

      1.  Why is not detailed in the “black book”
      2. How should we interpret Gods guidance?
      3. What does forgiving yourself relate to your personal relationship with your faith?
      4. Or is forgiving yourself something God thinks should be obvious because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ?
      5. Are there any limitations to forgiveness?   (in comparison “in” the Bible)
      6. Is this a “test” of our faith?
      7. What would St. Peter say to you (while entering Heaven)?

As we go “around the horn” to discuss our thoughts. A good reference (some type of scripture) would help.

      Service Support:  Synod

      Closing Prayer

Note:   This is the last month we are going to discuss forgiveness (we need to move on)!

    1. Topic: can you forgive yourself?  (and…do you need to?)

Notes from reading the book Forgiving What You Can’t Forget  By Lysa TerKeurst  (I would recommend this book.  I’d give this book a 😊😊😊😊😊😉 smiley face rating.

      • I started reviewing the book, and after the first 80 pages the book demanded I take some notes.  Not only was our topic for our March Theology on Tap (TOT), but for April 28 our topic is do you forgive ourselves?    I scribbled down 6 pages of notes , and would like to share a few “talking points” that did inspire me (a little).  Going to “weed” down some notes to focus on our topic
        • Forgiving ourselves is not in the Bible  (with faith, do you really have too?)

The purpose of forgiveness is not always reconciliation, Forgiveness helps mend the hurting heart

      • We can’t forgive ourselves (Who then forgives?)
      • Forgiveness is part of the Christian faith
      • Remember:  Can not control what you can’t control
      • God is asking for us to forgive
      •  Read Psalm 32:5 p.243  ask for Gods forgiveness

      Need to have boundaries

      • Boundaries are to help yourself with your choice p.132-4
      • Boundaries are the sake of stability
      •  Change only happens from the inside out

Have the weight of shame if you don’t forgive yourself

Forgiveness releases our need for retaliation, not our need to change boundaries

Basic rules Christians need to follow, rules of the road.  (from Romans 12:9-21):  p.129

      • Love must be sincere
      • Hate what is evil
      • Cling to what is good
      • Be devoted to one another in love
      • Honor one another above yourself
      • Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervo
      • Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer
      • Share with the Lord’s people in need
      • Practice hospitality
      • Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people in lower positions
      • Do not be conceited
      • Do not repay anyone evil for evil
      • Live at peace with everyone
      • Do not take revenge, leave room for Gods wrath

For me, it all breaks down to the Quality (notice the big Q) of your faith.  Like how good is good enough?  As a degreed Quality Engineer I rely on general statistics for most situations.  Among Theologians this is a debatable topic, with really no winners or losers.  Basically you yourself needs to be content with the Quality of your faith and, like the book reads, Jesuses death “clears the air”.  I’m still wrestling with this analogy because I don’t think there is a free pass to heaven.  We, as Christains, need to attempt following the rules of the road above, but knowing you (yourself) failed on or two is something that concerns me (for forgiving myself).  Why is is OK?

      • The road map is John 3:16
        • Do you believe Jesus Christ died for your sins?
        • God is the judge p. 102
        • We need to be vulnerable
        • Grieving takes place with forgiveness
        • Whatever I have placed in Gods hands, I still posses (Martrin Luther) p.82
        • Romans 5:3-5 suffering builds character  (I like this)
        • Lord says revenge is mine.  (“How can God do nothing?”)

      Grief finds everyone

      Spiritual force of evil

      • Overcome evil with good
      • Be honest to not give what you can’t give p. 137
      • Where was God?
      • The author liked the word Hope p. 141
      • God could (can) see the hurt!
      • We can’t forget to pray for others (and yourself) p.143
      • Why does God allow suffering?   Question why does God hate me? Pain of forgiving yourself
      • Remember God is faithful for the Whole Story p. 147
      • Does grief lead to joy? P. 152  “the Journey”  Do we want grief for no forgiving ourselves?
      • Even Jesus asks the Father for forgiving the people who crucified him! P.154
      • Need to just trust God in thr “answering to prayer”
      • Do we expect to much? (from God)
      • Is God at fault…..no way, we shouldn’t be thinking that.  The unfairness.
      • God has not wronged you (me) p. 169

The SGG had bitterness before reading this book, in fact my bitterness was set in stone 30 years ago!

      • Can grief find a way out?  Bitterness!
      • Bitterness want’s to consume everything about you.
      • Bitterness wears the disguise of other chaotic emotion that are harder to attribute to the original source of hurt. P.176  (good talking point!)
      • Does resentment play in your soul
      • Bitterness has a core of hurt.  P.178

Conclusion:  This was one of the better books I have reviewed on forgiveness.  Releasing my own forgiveness on myself might be beneficial to my own health and spiritual freedom.  Though, understanding the principles of forgiveness, is it a distraction from my basic leadership principles.  ☹

      1. Mission:  Would like to create an “elevator talk” about why my irregular movements has caused me to concentrate on why my body is shaking (is it neurons?).

Scope:  create a 3-5 min “Trump Tower” elevator talk about why my neurons could be influencing my irregular movements.    Kate (speech therapist), I’m enjoying doing this “limited little research”!

My basic outline:  This can be changed….I would like to create a “flow” of information when I’m talking to new people.  People ask: “what do you do?”  replying that you are unemployed is a real downer for your wellbeing.   This data (below) needs to edited (a lot).

        • What’s a neuron
          • neuron is fundamentally defined as a nerve cell. Neurons are vital for communication and coordination between the brain and the body.  The size of a neuron varies, but here are some general dimensions123:  (from utube Bing VideosDiameter of axons and dendrites: Typically about one micrometer thick.
            • Soma (cell body) diameter: Usually about 10–25 micrometers.
            • Axon size: Can range from 0.1 millimeters to over 3 feet.
        • What does a neuron do?  (Neurons are vital for communication and coordination between the brain and the body)
        • Neuron Operations
          • Neurons that carry signals toward the brain and spinal cord as sensory data
          • Action potential is the quick flow of electrical voltage from the neurons down the axon.
          • Look at action potential for movement.  (when I shake, it must be from action potential neurons)
          • reaction of the synaptic clef.  Bing Videos
            • There are approximately 1 quadrillion synapses in the human brain
            • Dendrites receive the vast majority of a single neuron’s inputs, and coordinate the transformation of these signals into neuronal output
        • There are three main types of neuronsMotor neurons, Sensory neurons, and  Interneurons
        • Life/Death of a neuron
          • Neurons are nerve cells that send messages all over your body to allow you to do everything from breathing to talking, eating, walking, and thinking
          • scientists believed that once a neural circuit was in place, adding any new neurons would change the flow of information and break the brain’s communication system
        • Sensory neurons could affect my tremors?  How to create new neurons? (or manage signals?)
          • Reading/listening to a book
          • Puzzling
          • Listening to bubbling water
          • Practicing tai-chi/yoga helps
          • Interacting with people I your community
          • Neurogenesis helps create neurons.  Environment helps create neuron in hippocampus.  Watch your food.  For exercise you need blood to the brain.
        • Could this disruption of ions in neurons cause tremors?   (I’m not this smart, for better understand check out the link below
          • Lower motor neurons pool together in the spinal cord to control specific muscle groups.5 Motor neurons control movement throughout the body, including breathing, speaking, swallowing, and digestive movements like peristalsis, which moves food through the digestive tract.  For the ions, if the ions surpass the threshold potential, then the ions fires (maybe this could be causing my irregular movements?).  Also thinking that this distortion could be on the synopsis off of the dendrite.
          • So yes, this distortion of signals due to the ions and the synopsis between dendrites could cause a distortive signal

        Harnessing neurons

        Biblical correlation:  (in my opinion)

        • “The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.” Psalm 119:130
        • Needle in a Haystack
          Mark 10:17-31
          by Rev. Randy Quinn

Some things seem impossible to us, like finding a needle in a haystack, or putting a camel through the eye of a needle, or, as Jesus suggests, for a rich person to enter into the Kingdom of God (Mk. 10:25).  (Is it almost impossible?)  And while some of us breathe a big sigh of relief thinking we are not rich people for whom Jesus says it will be difficult; the truth is, we are the richest people in the world. If all we were earning was half of minimum wage, we would be among the wealthiest 10% of the world’s population.

        • “You lack one thing,” Jesus says (Mk. 10:21). I think the one thing the man lacks is trust in God. He trusts his money more than he trusts his maker. He doesn’t want Jesus to make decisions in his life.
        • John 3:16 For God so loved the world….
        • “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.” — Psalm 136:1 “It’s like finding a needle in a haystack.” The idiom is used to describe an almost impossible task. The earliest known use of similar words comes from Cervantes in Don Quixote in 1605.

Am I thinking of changing God’s creation? (changing neurons?)

    1. Synopsis

God is patient, showing longsuffering kindness to sinners1His default attitude toward us is patience and kindness2He is not slow to fulfill his promises, but is patient toward us, not wishing that any should perish3However, God is never said to be patient about things or circumstances, as He knows all things

      From:  https://www.openbible.info/topics/god_is_patient

      God is slow to anger

Patience seems to be a rare quality in people today. People lose their patience and let their anger fly at the smallest offenses. Is God like this? Does God punish people because he can’t control his anger? Let’s see what Scripture has to say about the patience of God.

The Psalmist David revealed God’s true heart towards us:

The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.  (Psalm 103:8-10)

To believers and unbelievers alike, God is slow to get angry. His default attitude toward us is patience and kindness.

The apostle Paul states that “love is patient” (1 Corinthians 13:4). So, we are assured that God’s love toward us is also patient. Believers in Christ especially come to know God’s patience as we grow to be like Christ. Although God expects us to mature, he doesn’t demand immediate change, but allows us time to grow, as a good Father would do.

      From:  https://christinscripture.com/2024/04/01/gods-ways-are-higher-than-ours/

David Hocking wrote, “God is never said to be patient about things or circumstances. Why? It is because He knows all things. He knows the beginning from the end. He does not have any need of that kind of patience.

      Some Ideas

      • What about Gods patience over in Gaza?
      • Slaves, Jews, segregation  (what ‘s your opinion of what God is thinking?  Is He being patient?
      • How does Gods patience (in general) relate to the flood
      • Last month (discussion 73):  being touched by  an Angel, is this a means for God to share his Grace?
      • Will anything “bind” the Grace of  God?  Spirit is not included in the answer.
      • Andy’s book documented all the “structures” of Angels that’s in heaven, does this describe how God uses patience through Angels

I believe that God knows all things…the beginning and the end.

    2. How do you become an Angel?
    3. Is an Angel “dubbed” by God to supervise certain people or situations (sort of like a police officer…but police in heaven?   ☹)
    4. If #3 is viable, how are these people or situations determined…by God?
    5. Why do we need Angels?  Like in the movie, does a Angel have to earn it’s wings by doing good?
    6. What does the Bible have to say abut Angels?
    7. Or, are Angels just a recruiting tool?
    8. What about disasters and even war, where are the Angels?

So, above I’ve listed some of MY question that I have on Angels.  Please come up with your own question, or pick one that’s listed.  Be prepared to discuss your thought to the group (no more than 10 min).  Remember it’s only a 1 hr. discussion..

      1. Where is it?
      2. Size? (and all the potential people cruising through the “Pearlie gate”
      3. Are we going to see God, or is he all around us?  What is the difference between earth and heaven?
      4. If we are “the spirit in the sky” do we have any organs?  Do we need oxygen?
      5. Describe the Joy your going to feel being at the best place?
      6. What’s it going to be like to cause no harm?
      7. Is there going to be golf courses, ski resorts, or fishing in Heaven.  Will there  be limits (size of fish, pars, birdies, eagles)?
      8. Will there be sadness?
      9. If you are an overachiever (and share) how will Heaven be for you?
      10. Can you become a better person in Heaven, or have you reached your plateau?

Above I have listed 10 questions (you only need to write 7 sentences on one subject) to talk about Heaven.  I’m not a smart guy, so please add/document any of your thoughts about Heaven.

For me, will send my speculative thoughts in a couple of weeks.  I have studied engineering, and am interested in stats (numbers).  Is this going to matter (for my speculative thoughts)?  So my speculative thoughts could be a little bias.

So, isn’t this what we are all striving for?   THE PRIZE (what does going to Heaven really mean?)  maybe this could be TOT topic 73?

      SGG

Also talk of the third heaven (2 Corinthians 12:2-10).  What does that mean?  Body out of body?   No mortal will boast of this of heaven.

      MY SPECULATION OF HEAVEN

      What’s this prize like?

Heaven (the first) is all around us, maybe in a different dimension (size will be to volume of the universe….billions of light years in width as the Hubble telescope reads)?  If we keep our same interest will be able to golf, fish, play sports anytime (if time means anything) we will be, like the song says, “spirit in the sky”.  Most people in heaven will not see God because he is in the “third heaven”.  Structural issues?   Don’t know the “properties” of a spirit, but the spirit should be full of Joy, and all will be content and happy

Purpose:  I’m asking for Gods help in solving my irregular movements I now have after my accident (33 years ago).  In the past few years my interaction with different people seems to help.  I’m hoping that my current interaction with others will be the “mustard seed” I need to control my irregular movements.  So, my verse is: Mark 9:23

“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”

What does can’ mean?  Be able to.  So who/what defines if you’re able?

Jesus said to him, “If you are able! (recording interaction data)—All things can be done for the one who believes.”

                  Mark 9:23 – NRSV

                  ISSUES:

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”  Mark 10:27

Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”  Luke 18:27

He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”  Matthew 17:20

    1. What did Jesus look like in Isaiah 53?

The Old Testament prophesied in Isaiah 53 that Jesus would not have any external features or beauty that would attract or draw people to Him. Isaiah adds that Jesus would grow up like a plant out of dry ground with no form of kingly majesty. In short, Jesus looked like an average person wi esus would not have any external features or beauty that would attract or draw people to Him. Isaiah adds that Jesus would grow up like a plant out of dry ground with no form of kingly majesty. In short, Jesus looked like an average person with no distinguishing characteristics.

The book of Revelation describes what Jesus looks like after ascending to heaven with a glorified body. In two main places, Revelation 1 and 19, John sees Jesus in vision and writes down the following description. Jesus looks like the “Son of Man” who is clothed with a garment going down to His feet and a golden sash around His chest (Revelation 1:13). His head and hair are white like snow (Rev 1:14) and His eyes are like flames of fire (Rev 1:14; 2:18; 19:12). John sees Jesus holding seven stars in His right hand (Rev 1:16) and His feet look like highly polished brass from a furnace (Rev 1:15, 2:18). Jesus’ face also shines like the sun in its brilliance (Rev 1:16).

—whether He was black, yellow, brown, or white? Though this may be a controversial issue for some, the truth is that we simply don’t know what the color of Jesus’ skin was. While there are countless references to Jesus being Jewish as that was His heritage, the Bible provides little, if any, description of what Jesus might have looked like.  Was Jesus black? | GotQuestions.org

      Jesus in Daniel’s Visions

It is interesting to note that Daniel describes Jesus with nearly identical characteristics. Daniel 10:5-6 describes Jesus in the following way:

      Dressed in linen (Daniel 10:5)

      • Pure golden sash around waist (Daniel 10:5)
      • Body looked like Beryl (Daniel 10:6)
      • Face like flashes of lightning (Daniel 10:6)
      • Eyes like flaming torches (Daniel 10:6)
      • Arms and feet like polished bronze (Daniel 10:6)
      • Voice like the sound of a multitude (Daniel 10:6)

      MY SPECULATIVE VIEW

Adam was created in the likeness of God123This means that humans are like God and represent Him as rulers over creation2God created humans to be like himself3Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth1When Adam was fallen and corrupted, he begat a son in his own image, sinful and defiled, frail and mortal, and miserable like himself4.

      So in Exodus 33:18-23

Opening prayer:   We are all thankful for gathering and discussing Jesus’s appearance.  It will be an interesting hour!

      1. Would like to say that this topic does not effect my faith
        1. It’s interesting
        1. Good discussion topic
        1. Besides discussion what’s the value
      2. From a historian view:
        1. The Bible describes Jesus as an average-looking man whose appearance didn’t stand out in a unique way. The Gospels mention certain clothes he wore. John describes a heavenly vision he had of Jesus in Revelation
        1. My thoughts….Back in Genesis Adam was created in the likeness of God.
          1.  You have this 3 in 1 concept
          1. Mosses didn’t want to die
          1. Why didn’t God want to show his face?
            1. Is this so he could work into the local community?
            1. So really, his appearance is determined by is followers (which is changing (fluid))
      3. Do we need to discuss what God looks like?  I think that the correlation between God, Mosses, Mary, and Jesus works for me!
        1. This is why there is a black Jesus, a Eskimo Jesus, Iraqi, and an Inian Jesus
        1. It’s not the appearance of Jesus, it’s his word!
        1. Though Jesus did change in his transfiguration
      4. Moses sees God’s back in Exodus 33:18-23, when he asks to see God’s glory. God agrees to show him His goodness, but not His face, because no one can see His face and live. God places Moses in a cleft of a rock and covers him with His hand until He passes by. Then He removes His hand and lets Moses see His back. This is a theophany, an event of intensive presence of God, that reveals His grace and faithfulness to His people12.

      1. This is why I garden; from the book clubs November reading “The Roots of my Obsession” by Thomas Cooper “my chapter”

Had a family garden at birth. Started planting seeds for lettuce, carrots, and corn by 1970. Both parents grew up on a farm. So eating from the garden seemed to be natural for the family. The garden soon had tomatoes, potatoes, and corn. We had difficulty with carrots because of the clay soil. Growing up your garden needed to be in tip top shape (and it usually was). When I left home for the military (after college) the garden started to “slip” a little. In 1991 I had a traumatic brain injury that brought me back to Rockford.
Having irregular movements (from Brain Injury) and was encourage to garden…so I did! Thoughts from the Neurologist & therapist were that gardening will help “calm you down”. It might have helped some, but was still fascinated with the biology of a seed becoming a plant. This led me to grow roses. I’ve heard woman like flowers…I’m single..Soooo? . This influence led me to become a Master Gardener and working at the City’s Rose Garden.
Being a Master Gardener, a rose bed (Red Ribbon Rose shrub) was assigned to me. In fact, it’s the first bed out of 70+ rose beds in the garden. I think I was assigned this bed because of my disabilities and accessibility issues (thanks Mary). Anyway, this gives me excellent opportunities to interact with people “walking/viewing” the roses (like how to prune) and answer general gardening questions. This helps calms me down😊. Helping people garden gives me an outstanding feeling, it’s just like people commenting of viewing my rose shrubs from the street as they drive by our house. People say “Your a good gardener”, but my response from the movie Tin Cup: “A blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while”.
For 2022, still having irregular movements, looking for “something” that might help my nervous system. This led me to a Japanese Garden, that’s about 2 miles away from our house. In the past few decades I have only visited the garden once or twice.
Going tech now: I’m thinking that the soothing feeling I’m receiving from hearing the bubbling water (in the garden) is from an estimated 86 billion neurons in my nervous system. In my earlier years I was a Hard Rock guitarist (AC/DC), that used a distortion box. This distortion box gave you the hard rock sound (irregular guitar signal sound). I’m thinking maybe my neurotransmitters (controls neurons) are being distorted somehow? Need to find the neuron controls?
Have tried a couple meds. for a few months to control the neurons, but didn’t like the side effects. Currently I enjoy sitting in a garden by a stream of running water while practicing tai-chi/yoga poses. Gardens relate to nature, and nature helps me control my inner self.

Nowadays, it seems as though you need a second by second “spreadsheet” depicting the status of the body of Jesus as he is ascending. My thought is that after three days, isn’t that the Apostles creed?,…..he ascended into heaven (the creed doesn’t give us any time constants). Then, is going to heaven only have only one entry and one exit door? I think Jesus appeared after his resurrection (came back from heaven) to show his disciples kindness and to continue sewing the good news seed. Further thinking tells me the time for ascension doesn’t really teach us much besides following our faith. Though, it is a great talking point for TOZ discussion #46! I’m asking for a rebuttal.

(Sending this note a week early to generate some thoughts)
For our discussion the 25th of January I would like to set up a little “structure”.
Starting with your favorite bible verse

      1. In the Gospel of Matthew 16:19, Jesus says to Peter, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on Earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on Earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Ref: In Revelations 16 there is talk about the 7 angels and the seven bowels of plagues. The seventh bowel was poured into the air. You think, “what could you pour into the air”? We can discuss my thoughts that evening.

      Referance: 5. Wisdom vs. Folly | Bible.org
THE CONNECTION BETWEEN FOLLY AND PLEASURE
Ecc 2:12 Next, I decided to consider wisdom, as well as foolish behavior and ideas.
Solomon desires to compare and contrast the two paths that he had just taken. The two paths that had just been taken were those of wisdom and pleasure seeking, and yet in this verse Solomon says that he is going to compare wisdom and foolish behavior.
Is pleasure seeking synonymous with foolish behavior? Ecclesiastes 7:4 links these two ideas and is most clearly seen in the Updated New American Standard (NAU) translation …
NAU1 Ecc 7:4 The mind of the wise is in the house of mourning, While the mind of fools is in the house of pleasure.

What does the Bible say about Stewardship? According to scripture, God created Earth for mankind and we are now stewards of His creation. This means it is our responsibility to look after and take care of this world. We should accept this responsibility and appreciate God’s gift of creation for being our home. Our stewardship of creation involves the caretaking of the environment and animals as well as our families and communities.

      1. Unfortunately, I think that many Christians believe that the verses in Genesis where God says “rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground” means that man has the right to do anything he wants to!

However, when Jesus feeds the 5,000 and the 3,000, there are many basketfuls left over and the disciples are directed to gather them up so that nothing is wasted. I think we see here how the Lord wants us to manage resources. We are to use them, but not abuse them.

To start off with…this in not a lecture
      A. Have done some basic research and couln’t come up with a preferred response
      B. There is talk about:
      a. Jew
      b. Muslims
      c. And even Jihad (holy war)
      C. remove berry vines and sneeze weedNone of these Gods fit the bill from my upbringing with my parents.
      D. So it all goes back to the basic ELCA
      E. Remember that Gods life is eternal, and in the beginning, or the beginning of creation, God thought that he would do something (like creation).
      F. My thoughts on God is like a sheep in a herd
      a. Am I in the right herd?
      i. Holy wars with jihad
ii. Minimal compassion and mercy with Allah.
      G. As aa retired soldier I don’t understand this holy war stuff
      History of Gods:
Jews are waiting for the messiah
      Those thinking natural selection
A Muslim thinking Allah is God and is one is he compassionate or merciful?
      Jihad is the holy war
      Witches
      Healing
      Resolving disputes
      Talk of heaven/hell
      Being a martyr
In the Quran and Hadith limits are set for wars
      Jesus the son of God
Now are we all looking for life eternal?
I’m a beginning/end, stop start person, looking at the universe, It’s to understand where heaven really is? Or is heaven a state of being, or a different dimension?

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he …

    2. My Thoughts: I’m not a documented theologian, but I’m a schooled engineer who likes (though, not that productive with) statistics. You think about the origin of God and us mortals think there has to be a start….and I couldn’t even begin (Genesis) that would describe the origin of God. No one has really successfully have completed such. So I guess it falls back on the scape goat of being Eternal (more to come).

      1. I agree with this statement that “at the moment when everything else had its origin, God the Creator was already present and active.” Genesis records the beginning of life on planet earth and our human history. But even at the time of the end of the earth, God will always be present. If he wanted to, God could create and be tending to many earths (extraterrestrials!), but my own feeling is that he has a heart for this one. Jesus died for this one!

One thing: I understand Eve a little differently. She was the smart one that the serpent had to convince to eat the fruit, while the man just went along. Also, without eating the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, would we even be here as human being with free will – and the ability to make decisions for good or ill?

In the news/media it’s been documented there is an issue between colored/foreign immigrant and the U.S. police department. So here’s the discussion; Biblically speaking (referencing the Bible), how do you interpret the use of extreme/deadly force against alleged suspects? Lets have an educated discussion referencing the Bible. For instance; Thou shall not murder (Exodus 20:13) or the golden rule (What is the Golden Rule? (Matthew 7:12; Luke 6:31) (internet). Please, no judging on this issue, let’s gather all the info. And discuss.

    Remember:
    1. What is the policeman’s duties.
    2. What is this action affected you personally?
    3. Police officers’ feelings
    4. How did this conflict start?
    5. Is this really a color/immigrant issue? Or actions?

So does it matter if you follow the golden rule (do unto others…) or will the Lord always show compassion by his Grace?

The written history of the bible (from my timid research) is between 4,000BC to 100AD (from 2 different sources). Not going to debate such statistics. I’m thinking as time changes so does (your) reaction. Just like Newtons (2) Law of thermodynamics…there is an equal and opposite reaction. So what gives? Is the force used equal to the initial oppressed force?

    7. I think these instances of police brutality have to be considered on a case by case basis. It does seem to me that there have been instances where the police have used excessive force that has resulted in the death of the individual. I think systemic racism has something to do with these cases. Systemic racism is a result of not following the golden rule “treating others as you would like to be treated,” but instead assuming that a person is guilty or probably in the wrong just because of the color of his/her skin. Jesus Christ did not treat anyone according to the prevalent prejudices of the day. He spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well and offered her “living water” even though she was a Samaritan and a woman.

      1. I am not sure if I understand this question. Certainly we forgive or we don’t forgive, I think you can’t kind of forgive. In terms of measure, I believe we are supposed to forgive our neighbor 70 x 7– which I think in biblical terms is an infinite number of times. Difficult to do!

      2. Oops! I answered this below in — are some things unforgiveable! So I will answer unforgivable here! I think in God’s eyes all sin is equal, but certainly intentional murder seems to most people as something that would be unforgivable. But there are stories where people are somehow able to forgive even someone who has murdered someone in their family. That takes an incredible amount of grace– but that is the grace that God shows us! He would forgive. I have heard people try to debate whether Hitler could be forgiven after killing over 6 million people. I have heard the argument, that if he was penitent and turned to the Lord, God would forgive him.

      1. I believe we are called to pray for our enemies, even if we don’t feel like it. Praying for our enemies will hopefully change our own heart. Sometimes though, it helps to try not to think about the offense the person has done. Sometimes at least a temporary solution can be to just try to move on and not think about it.

      1. I think in this passage, the Lord is trying to instruct us on how to act as Christians. We are not supposed to repay evil with evil– we are supposed to forgive. If there has to be vengeance, then it would be God’s to carry out. There is that saying “what goes around comes around.” I think that God is saying that we should not act in a vengeful way, but that people who do bad things may have a comeuppance or a consequence to their actions at the end. I think the Lord forgives all who ask for forgiveness.

I was thinking about the story of the prodigal son. The father forgives the prodigal even before he can ask for forgiveness. We have a God like that – a God who loves, a God who does not hold grudges, a God who is more forgiving than we could ever be.

It is easy to be kind to my neighbor by picking up groceries on a beautiful May day, much more difficult when it is 20 below zero in January. In one’s thought life, I believe that kindness is making an effort to always think well of others and “put the best constructon on everything.” Sometimes trying to do this goes against our true nature.

This took place “decades” ago. Since then, the churches sanctuary kept coming back into my mind. When I finally got serious about going to church, my fist thought was the LCGS. From that moment through my spirit, it said simply welcome home this is where you ae supposed to be. That was back in 1993 or 94, and have never considered another place to worship. My only regrets are that I should have listened to my memory so much sooner and that I should have joined the choir years before I did. The people at the LCGS or wonderful. I have gotten to do works of faith with many members. The strength of these members is another reason why I come! All this goodness tell me that life is worth living. There is heart crushing sorrow for sure, but there is also jubilant. bright, succulent joy. Good Shepherd is faith. A Quote from Johnny Cash “Faith is a flower of light in a field off darkness that gives you strength to carry on”. This is why I come to Good Shepherd, its from the Pastor to every member all of you help me keep the faith!

    Sincerely,

The reason I go to Good Shepherd is even knowing my God is with me 24/7. I need this “spiritual sense” the friendly people here (LCGS) provides. They are my family outside of my home. They are my support for any problems I may have. I can feel the love here.

There are a couple reasons of why I come to “the LCGS” and I will post them throughout the month. First reason (Number 1): I was baptized at the LCGS in the 60’s.

Forgiveness can be really tough. Reason: most of the time (should have a % number), it’s because you feel that you got TOOK in this forgiving situation! Simple solution, in most cases, use this situation as a learning opportunity to confront this sin before it even happens. For future forgiveness opportunities this could be a win/win situation. Thus, you might be able to prevent a need for forgiveness. I’m thinking of physical sins (like stealing…abuse (Ten Commandments).

    1. This is from the Scriber’s cousin Janet. I am not sure if I am replying at the correct place, but this is what I think about forgiveness.

The Lord calls us to forgive 70 X 7. The old adage is “forgive and forget,” but it is easier said than done. In forgiving, a person can intellectually decide to forgive someone, but it may be difficutl to forget. In a small matter like a little white lie, or a slip of the tongue a person can forgive and with a little effort forget.

But in larger matters, if a person has been wronged it is harder to forgive. A person may intellectually decide to forgive someone, but the issue and its consequences can in no way be easily forgotten It is then that a person must rely on the Lord Jesus Christ, who has forgiven us, to help him/her forgive the other peson and to let the matter go as much as possible. The Lord’s help is needed so that thoughts don’t go toward getten even or revenge. Sometimes a hurt is so grievous that reconciliation on this earth may not be possible. But with the Lord’s help, a person can forgive in their heart and hope for reconciliation in heaven.

Was at the ice cream social last night, and of course, I had to bring up the topic of forgiveness. My response was that once you ask God for forgiveness you must also forgive yourself. There is also consequences for your sins. These would be mortal consequences, not spiritual.

Currently I think of forgiveness as a financial matter…like forgiving a debt. Though, we also must look at forgiveness as an act of kindness.

    Question: why practice faith?

    Answer: better question….why not?

Just think about the potential advantages of practicing(religious) faith. Eternal LIFE….life after death. The master judge is God, so it appears to me (if you’re mobile) that you need to walk and talk in Jesus’s name. So I know there is a lot of debatable hypothesis about faith in Jesus (if that’s the religious faith were talking about), but walking with Jesus (understanding his doctrine) should lead you to a more “rounded” life. So……., do you want to miss out on this opportunity? I don’t think faith is a “one and done” process. How would you feel if St. Peter doesn’t open the gates of heaven for you? The Bible tells us to spread the “good news”….so we shall!

    I read:

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

does this sum up what the tree of life is about?

Question: “What is the meaning of the tree of life?”

Answer: The tree of life, mentioned in the books of Genesis and Revelation, is a life-giving tree created to enhance and perpetually sustain the physical life of humanity. The tree was planted by God in the Garden of Eden: “The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” (Genesis 2:9). The centrally located tree of life would have been easily accessible to Adam and Eve from any point in the garden.

    We need to discuss this!
    1. what defines a miracle?
    2. Isn’t God in control?
    3. Or does the Evil one also do miracles?

All Miracles Are Not God’s Miracles.
Not all miracles come from God. God is all powerful, but not all miracles come from God. There are people that are not of God that can perform signs and wonders. Matthew 24:24 advises us that all miracles do not come from God.
Matthew 24:24, “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”

  51. In our confession of faith, we sometimes confess that “we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves.” The forgiveness and new life in Christ frees us from our bondage to sin, and frees us to love and care for one another. We are still sinners, and will always be this side of the resurrection. But we are at the same time forgiven and freed to love.

Pain medications dulled the sharp pain and helped me to get by, but my bondage only ended when I experienced healing. And once I was healed (over 40+ days after my pain began) it was difficult to even imagine that pain.

Neither bondage not pain knows middle ground.
