    1. What did Jesus look like in Isaiah 53?

      The Old Testament prophesied in Isaiah 53 that Jesus would not have any external features or beauty that would attract or draw people to Him. Isaiah adds that Jesus would grow up like a plant out of dry ground with no form of kingly majesty.       The book of Revelation describes what Jesus looks like after ascending to heaven with a glorified body. His head and hair are white like snow (Rev 1:14) and His eyes are like flames of fire (Rev 1:14; 2:18; 19:12). John sees Jesus holding seven stars in His right hand (Rev 1:16) and His feet look like highly polished brass from a furnace (Rev 1:15, 2:18). Jesus’ face also shines like the sun in its brilliance (Rev 1:16).

      —whether He was black, yellow, brown, or white? Though this may be a controversial issue for some, the truth is that we simply don’t know what the color of Jesus’ skin was.       Jesus in Daniel’s Visions

      It is interesting to note that Daniel describes Jesus with nearly identical characteristics. Daniel 10:5-6 describes Jesus in the following way:

      Dressed in linen (Daniel 10:5)

      • Pure golden sash around waist (Daniel 10:5)
      • Body looked like Beryl (Daniel 10:6)
      • Face like flashes of lightning (Daniel 10:6)
      • Eyes like flaming torches (Daniel 10:6)
      • Arms and feet like polished bronze (Daniel 10:6)
      • Voice like the sound of a multitude (Daniel 10:6)

      MY SPECULATIVE VIEW

      Adam was created in the likeness of God123. This means that humans are like God and represent Him as rulers over creation2. God created humans to be like himself3. Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth1. When Adam was fallen and corrupted, he begat a son in his own image, sinful and defiled, frail and mortal, and miserable like himself4.

      So in Exodus 33:18-23

        1. The Bible describes Jesus as an average-looking man whose appearance didn’t stand out in a unique way. The Gospels mention certain clothes he wore. John describes a heavenly vision he had of Jesus in Revelation

  7. August 2023: discussion #62

    Note: Picture is from our monthly meeting of Theology on Tap. This is where church members gather at a tavern and discuss the topic of the month. Our topic this month was food that is being used as a weapon. We discussed Macro views (Ukraine) and Micro view as local food deserts. We tied it together with Joseph in the Old Testament (Genesis) to Gods word in the New Testament (Matthew). Next month will be a continuation of this topic with October’s topic offering/(allowing) some speculation of A.I. (artificial Intelligence) in the Bible.

      2. This is why I garden; from the book clubs November reading “The Roots of my Obsession” by Thomas Cooper “my chapter”

        Had a family garden at birth. Started planting seeds for lettuce, carrots, and corn by 1970. Both parents grew up on a farm. So eating from the garden seemed to be natural for the family. The garden soon had tomatoes, potatoes, and corn. We had difficulty with carrots because of the clay soil. Growing up your garden needed to be in tip top shape (and it usually was). When I left home for the military (after college) the garden started to “slip” a little. In 1991 I had a traumatic brain injury that brought me back to Rockford.
        Having irregular movements (from Brain Injury) and was encourage to garden…so I did! Thoughts from the Neurologist & therapist were that gardening will help “calm you down”. It might have helped some, but was still fascinated with the biology of a seed becoming a plant. This led me to grow roses. I’ve heard woman like flowers…I’m single..Soooo? . This influence led me to become a Master Gardener and working at the City’s Rose Garden.
        Being a Master Gardener, a rose bed (Red Ribbon Rose shrub) was assigned to me. In fact, it’s the first bed out of 70+ rose beds in the garden. I think I was assigned this bed because of my disabilities and accessibility issues (thanks Mary). Anyway, this gives me excellent opportunities to interact with people “walking/viewing” the roses (like how to prune) and answer general gardening questions. This helps calms me down😊. Helping people garden gives me an outstanding feeling, it’s just like people commenting of viewing my rose shrubs from the street as they drive by our house. People say “Your a good gardener”, but my response from the movie Tin Cup: “A blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while”.
        For 2022, still having irregular movements, looking for “something” that might help my nervous system. This led me to a Japanese Garden, that’s about 2 miles away from our house. In the past few decades I have only visited the garden once or twice.
        Going tech now: I’m thinking that the soothing feeling I’m receiving from hearing the bubbling water (in the garden) is from an estimated 86 billion neurons in my nervous system. In my earlier years I was a Hard Rock guitarist (AC/DC), that used a distortion box. This distortion box gave you the hard rock sound (irregular guitar signal sound). I’m thinking maybe my neurotransmitters (controls neurons) are being distorted somehow? Need to find the neuron controls?
        Have tried a couple meds. for a few months to control the neurons, but didn’t like the side effects. Currently I enjoy sitting in a garden by a stream of running water while practicing tai-chi/yoga poses. Gardens relate to nature, and nature helps me control my inner self.

    4. After completing a slide show or why “do I garden”, this prompted me to write a small synopsis of why I go to church. Originally the slide show was for garden clubs/groups who are looking for a speaker (I have been asked to do this, but humbly declined). Being a Master Gardener (and a Christian) I should be able to share (like evangelism), I thought it would be I useful idea to document some “talking points” that has kept me attached to Good Shepherd.

      e. A person who got me swimming at the Knights club
      f. 1st grade teacher (45 venial playing “who do you say that I am”)
      g. Friends from around the West side of Rockford (Sunday School)

      3. College/Military
      a. Wasn’t that active at Marquette (Catholic School) in dorms.
      b. As a leader in the military, I ensured the separation of church and state (always supporting “doing the right thing”).
      c. Goes back (above) to 1b…how do you treat others?

      4. Personal accident
      a. A prayer was said for we after my accident (was in a coma for 3 months, in three different states, and in hospital for 364 days.
      b. Very grateful for the church remembering me and the family during this time.
      c. Still recovering from my injuries, but I think I’m on the right path in the recovering process. Maybe be an example for others?

      5. Statistical/history calculations of life
      a. I like math/statistics (though, not very good at) and graphs, understand that they can be used as a marketing tool (both for good and bad….sample size)
      b. I think, from James Kennedy’s book, that he thinks the earth is 10^23 years old. I think this is a infinite number?….so what does this mean?

      Why do I go to church:
      Bottom line: Be kind to others and your spirit will grow in you! Remember Others (sometimes that’s tough to do!).

    The war in Ukraine, from our public news, has been evil. Are topic for the month of November is to correlate any actions the Russian have taken against Ukraine to any reading in the NIV (New International Version) Bible.     1. The Webb telescope might give us a new view of creation if we are able to see (as my Google Search indicates) back to possibly “100 million years after the Big Bang when the first stars and galaxies started to form.”

      1. Does this mean we are going to live with pain…? it’s just natural? I’m personally dealing with releasing the stress in your synthetic nervous system. I don’t know how to do this correctly, and probably no one has a 100% cure (there is always some variable). By following the different paths available maybe calm will come to the synthetic nervous system? These paths are what God provides us.

    3. Note from the SGG for TOZ discussion #46
      Have been a member since 1967, have been through baptism, Sunday school, confirmation, house of feloi, bible studies, church council, and have never seriously looked at the series of ascensions (Is this an ELCA issue?). Nowadays, it seems as though you need a second by second “spreadsheet” depicting the status of the body of Jesus as he is ascending. My thought is that after three days, isn’t that the Apostles creed?,…..he ascended into heaven (the creed doesn’t give us any time constants). Then, is going to heaven only have only one entry and one exit door? I think Jesus appeared after his resurrection (came back from heaven) to show his disciples kindness and to continue sewing the good news seed. Further thinking tells me the time for ascension doesn’t really teach us much besides following our faith. Though, it is a great talking point for TOZ discussion #46! I’m asking for a rebuttal.

      1. Unfortunately, I think that many Christians believe that the verses in Genesis where God says “rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground” means that man has the right to do anything he wants to!

        However, when Jesus feeds the 5,000 and the 3,000, there are many basketfuls left over and the disciples are directed to gather them up so that nothing is wasted. I think we see here how the Lord wants us to manage resources. We are to use them, but not abuse them.

        I think the Lord is heartbroken over the demise of the earth, but in a way, it may be something that has been predicted. I think it may be another sign that we are in the end times, and that Jesus’ return is growing closer.

    5. My Thoughts: I’m not a documented theologian, but I’m a schooled engineer who likes (though, not that productive with) statistics. You think about the origin of God and us mortals think there has to be a start….and I couldn’t even begin (Genesis) that would describe the origin of God. No one has really successfully have completed such. So I guess it falls back on the scape goat of being Eternal (more to come).

I agree with this statement that “at the moment when everything else had its origin, God the Creator was already present and active.” Genesis records the beginning of life on planet earth and our human history. But even at the time of the end of the earth, God will always be present. If he wanted to, God could create and be tending to many earths (extraterrestrials!), but my own feeling is that he has a heart for this one. Jesus died for this one!

    13. I think these instances of police brutality have to be considered on a case by case basis. It does seem to me that there have been instances where the police have used excessive force that has resulted in the death of the individual. I think systemic racism has something to do with these cases. Systemic racism is a result of not following the golden rule “treating others as you would like to be treated,” but instead assuming that a person is guilty or probably in the wrong just because of the color of his/her skin. Jesus Christ did not treat anyone according to the prevalent prejudices of the day. He spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well and offered her “living water” even though she was a Samaritan and a woman.

        My story starts (December 1991) when I was in the hospital in Minneapolis recovering from my brain injury (June 1991). The snow was very healthy at this time. I them made a “deal” with God telling/asking him (with His help) when I get discharged I will always clear the snow!. What a motiational tool to use! (this issue can be debate and/or a paper can be written on this subject).

I think in God’s eyes all sin is equal, but certainly intentional murder seems to most people as something that would be unforgivable. But there are stories where people are somehow able to forgive even someone who has murdered someone in their family. That takes an incredible amount of grace– but that is the grace that God shows us! He would forgive. I have heard people try to debate whether Hitler could be forgiven after killing over 6 million people. I have heard the argument, that if he was penitent and turned to the Lord, God would forgive him.

      1. I believe we are called to pray for our enemies, even if we don’t feel like it. Praying for our enemies will hopefully change our own heart. Sometimes though, it helps to try not to think about the offense the person has done. Sometimes at least a temporary solution can be to just try to move on and not think about it.

      1. My translation says “forget me,” but I don’t think the Lord ever forgets us or fails to forgive us if we come to him. I think we may be in evil times until Jesus comes back?

      2. I think in this passage, the Lord is trying to instruct us on how to act as Christians. We are not supposed to repay evil with evil– we are supposed to forgive. If there has to be vengeance, then it would be God’s to carry out. There is that saying “what goes around comes around.” I think that God is saying that we should not act in a vengeful way, but that people who do bad things may have a comeuppance or a consequence to their actions at the end. I think the Lord forgives all who ask for forgiveness.

    An issue just occurred today when I received an asking for assistance card from Special Olympics. Sure, I would like to help, but….my name might gets thrown into their data base bucket being marked as a contributor. This could mean more asking for assistance notes (which I don’t want or need). This type of situation has occurred multiple times in the past with different organizations. BUT…AM I KIND?. I would say yes (on the surface), but don’t want to be taken advantage of!     1. Mindfulness come from the Buddhist tradition. Mindfulness is related to stress reduction. How? Now I have not created a database to scientifically prove this, but being kind helps (most of the time) the current situation you are in. In the next couple of days I will post a couple examples of how it has effected me personally :).

    1. I just really don’t know? I watch a “ultimate fighting” match on ESPN where two people are beating each other up. Then when the match is over (if there is no knock-out) the two fist bump or hug. Maybe the kindness is to let your body take a beating by showing kindness to your opponent? OR You would think that you would want to win by beating your opponent to a pulp! But the question is…where is the kindness in that act? It probably goes back to this judging thing.

Sometimes I can get so wrapped up in something (winning a game for example) and I take my competitiveness too far and say something that is hurtful. I have to constantly check myself and make sure that I’m not taking things too far as I am a competitive person.

It is easy to be kind to my neighbor by picking up groceries on a beautiful May day, much more difficult when it is 20 below zero in January. In one’s thought life, I believe that kindness is making an effort to always think well of others and “put the best constructon on everything.” Sometimes trying to do this goes against our true nature.

Forty (40) years ago no one would even think that 11 peopple would be sitting in a tavern identifying the challenges (test) we have to share the Good News with others.

    1. This “IT” phenomena (internet/smart phones/texting) has brought many variables (another discussion(s)) into our religious practices.

    2. The church (in general) is not the gathering place for the community to interact and build friendships.

    3. We all have too much “stuff”, forgetting that we are stewards of this “stuff” from God! Does the American dream fuel greed?

    4. Why can’t God feed (in some logistical way) to hungry? Or is this a test on us humans?

    5. [in general] What’s in it for me? (like Karma?) (in Hinduism and Buddhism) the sum of a person’s actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences. (life after death?)

    2. Is this for fellowship only?
    3. What’s going to be show?
    4. Does it need the “boards” approval?

    7. Where at church (fireside room)?

    The reason why I come to the LCGS:

    I could write several pages on this subject, but will keep my response as short as I can. My sister *****&******, were both married at Good Shepherd when I was very young. This took place “decades” ago. Since then, the churches sanctuary kept coming back into my mind. When I finally got serious about going to church, my fist thought was the LCGS. From that moment through my spirit, it said simply welcome home this is where you ae supposed to be. That was back in 1993 or 94, and have never considered another place to worship. My only regrets are that I should have listened to my memory so much sooner and that I should have joined the choir years before I did. The people at the LCGS or wonderful. I have gotten to do works of faith with many members. The strength of these members is another reason why I come! All this goodness tell me that life is worth living. There is heart crushing sorrow for sure, but there is also jubilant. bright, succulent joy. Good Shepherd is faith. A Quote from Johnny Cash “Faith is a flower of light in a field off darkness that gives you strength to carry on”. This is why I come to Good Shepherd, its from the Pastor to every member all of you help me keep the faith!

    Forgiveness can be really tough. Reason: most of the time (should have a % number), it’s because you feel that you got TOOK in this forgiving situation! Simple solution, in most cases, use this situation as a learning opportunity to confront this sin before it even happens. For future forgiveness opportunities this could be a win/win situation. Thus, you might be able to prevent a need for forgiveness. I’m thinking of physical sins (like stealing…abuse (Ten Commandments).

    1. This is from the Scriber’s cousin Janet. I am not sure if I am replying at the correct place, but this is what I think about forgiveness.

      The Lord calls us to forgive 70 X 7. The old adage is “forgive and forget,” but it is easier said than done. In forgiving, a person can intellectually decide to forgive someone, but it may be difficutl to forget. In a small matter like a little white lie, or a slip of the tongue a person can forgive and with a little effort forget.

      But in larger matters, if a person has been wronged it is harder to forgive. A person may intellectually decide to forgive someone, but the issue and its consequences can in no way be easily forgotten It is then that a person must rely on the Lord Jesus Christ, who has forgiven us, to help him/her forgive the other peson and to let the matter go as much as possible. The Lord’s help is needed so that thoughts don’t go toward getten even or revenge. Sometimes a hurt is so grievous that reconciliation on this earth may not be possible. But with the Lord’s help, a person can forgive in their heart and hope for reconciliation in heaven.

    Just think about the potential advantages of practicing(religious) faith. Eternal LIFE….life after death. The master judge is God, so it appears to me (if you’re mobile) that you need to walk and talk in Jesus’s name. So I know there is a lot of debatable hypothesis about faith in Jesus (if that’s the religious faith were talking about), but walking with Jesus (understanding his doctrine) should lead you to a more “rounded” life. So……., do you want to miss out on this opportunity? I don’t think faith is a “one and done” process. How would you feel if St. Peter doesn’t open the gates of heaven for you? The Bible tells us to spread the “good news”….so we shall!

In our confession of faith, we sometimes confess that “we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves.” The forgiveness and new life in Christ frees us from our bondage to sin, and frees us to love and care for one another. We are still sinners, and will always be this side of the resurrection. But we are at the same time forgiven and freed to love.

  94. I was reminded this winter that physical pain can hold us in complete bondage to itself. I wasn’t able to do anything without experiencing excruciating nerve pain. Pain medications dulled the sharp pain and helped me to get by, but my bondage only ended when I experienced healing. And once I was healed (over 40+ days after my pain began) it was difficult to even imagine that pain.

    Neither bondage not pain knows middle ground.

  96. Just completed my 31 day (24hr.) Rhythmsrtar heart monitoring. So I was “bound” by 4 wires (attached to 4 electrodes attached to my chest). Having these wire was sort of like a physical bondage

  97. In the past month I have taken up learning to play the harmonica. Do I ever fell bound in the ability to inhale/exhale thru the harmonica to play notes….leading to a song! I have documented breathing “challenges”, so I’m taking “the next step” to help free me from this breathing bondage.

  98. After my head injury in the early 90’s, it sure seems that “rapid movements” create some sort of anxiety in my nervous system (causing me to tremor). This is the “bondage” that’s affecting me. If yo read this, please post and share your own story.
